< Back From Uncertainty to Mock Interviews: Chris Monello-Johnson’s Stuttering Journey If you’ve spent any length of time in the NSA community, chances are you’ve crossed paths with Chris Monello-Johnson, or at least heard his name. Maybe you’ve even done a mock interview with him and walked away with a little more confidence than you came in with. Chris has been part of the NSA world for a decade now, long enough to remember life before he joined and wise enough to be grateful he did. After college, Chris found himself wrestling with confidence, especially when it came to job interviews and showing up authentically. He wasn’t sure how his stutter fit into the “real world” version of success. That’s when his speech-language pathologist in NYC stepped in with a pivotal invite: “Come to a chapter meeting.” That meeting changed everything. “I’ve accepted my stutter, no longer hide it, and have found an incredibly supportive community,” Chris says. In the years since, he’s become an open stutterer and mentor to others on similar paths. One of his favorite ways to give back is helping other people who stutter crush those nerve-wracking job interviews. “Mock interviews are my favorite part,” he says. “I love helping people achieve their career goals.” His advice to anyone new to the NSA? “Meet as many people as you can — everyone is welcoming and supportive.” But don’t let all that career talk fool you, Chris knows how to keep things fun, too. He’s got two dogs, a soft spot for peanut butter ice cream, and an encyclopedic knowledge of Real Housewives of NYC. He’s also no stranger to a spotlight: he’s auditioned for American Idol and America’s Got Talent, and his go-to karaoke jam is Bon Jovi’s Living on a Prayer. As for his dream getaway? Bali’s calling. We’re not saying NSA should plan an Annual Conference there, but… we wouldn’t be mad about it. Mia Woltman WS@W Committee Mia Woltman is eager to ignite optimism alongside fellow people who stutter. As a woman in her young twenties, Mia navigates her first glimpse of a profession in Elementary Education with excitement about how she simultaneously encourages self-acceptance in her students and herself. As someone who is still learning, yet very much prepared to spread awareness, Mia will admit that she will stumble alongside NSA members as they juggle perspectives about stuttering. Mia is particularly motivated by acting as a role model for children who seek to have their adversity recognized and applauded. While Mia participates in her local NSA Chapter and contributes to WeStutter@Work, she enjoys the many outlets she has found to help cope with daily pressures: salsa/bachata dance lessons, creative writing, reading, kayaking, and spending time with her support circle.

I handle members money and help sure that all Ascent Credit Union members are satisfied. As a person who stutters, share the most challenging part of your job. The most challenging part of my job is communicating with my coworkers and members. Did you self-disclose your stuttering during the job hiring process? Yes, I did. I let them know that I stuttered before I started the interview. When it comes to my coworkers just let them ask me. Describe how stuttering makes you a better, more valued contributor at work. I believe my stutter helps me better relate to members that have a stutter or something similar. What is your proudest moment at your current company? One moment that comes to mind was helping a member fix a fraud on their account. What are your long-term career aspirations? I want to eventually go back to school and become a teacher. What’s your best advice for people who stutter just entering the workplace and for those in a career striving to achieve greater success? Don’t let your stutter hold you back. If anything, stuttering makes you more of a valuable worker. You are unique and special. Believe it!

Learn how Jason Baker,a person who stutters, achieved career success. Get inspired by their journey. Professor of Music Jason Baker Briefly describe your daily job duties. I teach percussion instruments in both individual and group settings. This involves private lessons, as well as leading and directing the percussion ensemble, marching band drumline, and steel drum band. I also serve as Recruiting Coordinator for the department, where I organize events both on and off campus to attract prospective students to our program. As a person who stutters, share the most challenging part of your job. My stuttering usually occurs when I’m tired or have had to speak for a long time, which can happen toward the end of a long day of teaching or an especially full week of events. My particular stutter consists more of “blocking” than typical repetition of sounds, so it can create a lot of physical tension in body in my body, as well. What are your long-term career aspirations? I just enjoy the variety of teaching, performing, publishing, composing, and service that life at the university has afforded me. Each semester brings in new students, situations, and opportunities, so there is always something I didn’t anticipate before, and that’s enough to keep me busy for a long time Did you self-disclose your stuttering during the job hiring process? If I suspect my stuttering is going to affect my speaking during an event (interview, lecture, or presentation) I will usually work it into what I am talking about, such as stating how playing music helped me develop positive self esteem in my youth despite being a stutterer. Usually, doing this will lessen my own anxiety and my speech will be more fluent. Either way, it becomes less of an issue and people seem fine with it either way. What is your proudest moment at your current company? Witnessing the growth in our program over the years and seeing former students now working and supporting their own families as professionals has been especially meaningful. Describe how stuttering makes you a better, more valued contributor at work. I think stuttering has always made me a hard worker. Having to work to do something everyday that most other people take for granted has created a resiliency and work ethic that I can carry over to other challenging situations in my work. What’s your best advice for people who stutter just entering the workplace and for those in a career striving to achieve greater success? Everyone is different in the severity and frequency their stuttering, but two thing we all have control over are the quality of work we can do at our jobs and how we treat others around us. Capitalizing on this will far outweigh any perceived shortcomings in how we speak.

That was 24 years ago, and he’s been all in ever since. “The NSA helped me accept my stuttering,” Jeff says. Whether he’s meeting someone new, cheering them on, or belting out Christina Aguilera’s “Dirrty” at karaoke (yes, really), Jeff brings authenticity and energy to every conversation. His advice for newcomers? Be a sponge. “Embrace everything you learn. Be open to new opportunities.” When he’s not connecting with the community or rewatching Friends, Jeff’s dreaming of Hawaii, imagining life with a dog, or thinking up ways to serve, he’s even a past president of the Sunnyvale Rotary Club. I create financial cost delta analysis for jet engine manufacturing processes and engine component changes. As a person who stutters, share the most challenging part of your job. The most challenging part of my job as a stutterer would be presenting to upper management, and their partners. It brings a very high stress environment when you have to be precise and diligent in communicating jet engine manufacturing process and component changes, as well as financial data. There’s certain vocabulary that may be unavoidable that I know are problem areas when talking. What are your long-term career aspirations? I’d love to be a motivational speaker, and an advocate for unique individuals like myself. Did you self-disclose your stuttering during the job hiring process? Yes! I always introduce myself and let people know that I stutter! I love that it gives me a chance to get the “pink elephant in the room” out of the way, and gives me a chance to educate people in what stuttering is if they’ve never came in contact with a stutterer. It is always well received, and sparks my confidence in every group I work with. What is your proudest moment at your current company? My proudest moment at my current company is when I switched from an on-site engineering role to off-site role. All of the shop floor workers expressed how I touched their lives or made their day better by my daily plant walk arounds just to say “good morning” and stopping to get to know them as people not just workers. I was able to make an impact on someoneelses life by putting myself outside of my comfort zone everyday! Describe how stuttering makes you a better, more valued contributor at work. My stutter has made me a more valued contributor at work because I’m more likely to put myself into awkward speaking situations; whether it’s reaching out to a team member that I’ve never talked to before or always checking in on people. It has opened the door to people being able to come to me for anything they need without hesitation and that has had a team building effect. What’s your best advice for people who stutter just entering the workplace and for those in a career striving to achieve greater success? Never be afraid to let your stutter show!
