- David Belgard:Career Success Story | National Stuttering Association
Learn how David Belgard,a person who stutters, achieved career success. Get inspired by their journey. Energy Accountant David Belgard Briefly describe your daily job duties. I am responsible for the coal and natural gas accounting processes for two power plants located in the South Louisiana. I account for anywhere between 8-to-10 million dollars of transactions each month. As a person who stutters, share the most challenging part of your job. The most challenging part of my job is the constant conference calls I am required to be on. Speaking on the phone is usually one of the biggest nightmares for someone who stutters. I have learned to embrace my stutter and understand that I bring value to the conversation, even if it may take me longer to finish what I am saying. Did you self-disclose your stuttering during the job hiring process? If so, how did you do it and how do you currently disclose your stuttering to unsuspecting co-workers, clients and or customers? No I did not disclose my stuttering during the interview process and I have not openly stated that I have a stutter. I feel that it is quite obvious at times that I have a stutter so we should not have to degrade ourselves and mention it. I feel it is more empowering to embrace it and continue to try your best to speak even when you are caught stuttering in the conversations you have. Describe how stuttering makes you a better, more valued contributor at work. At a young age, I made a decision that even though I might not be able to speak as fluently as other people around me, I can try my best to work harder than everyone else. So I believe stuttering has given me a drive that someone who does not stutter doesn’t have. People who stutter are some of the most incredible people in the world because not only do they have to handle the stress from ordinary work/life problems, but they also have to handle the stress of having a stutter. This makes us some of the most resilient and dedicated people in the world, in my opinion. What is your proudest moment at your current company? (Does not have to be related to stuttering.) I was hired during the process of my company acquiring another company in South Louisiana. I was hired to specifically assist in getting the accounting processes up and running for the new power plants we were acquiring. After nearly a year of hard work, my team and I were able to get a fluent accounting system up and running for these plants. While doing that, I was able to pass all four of my CPA exams and become a licensed Certified Public Accountant. This is my proudest achievement to date. What are your long-term career aspirations? I would love to open my own financial planning firm where I help struggling individuals and families become free from financial hardships. I grew up without a lot of finances and watched my mother struggle to provide for us. Those situations led me down the path I am on now and I want to let as many people know as possible that you do not have to live paycheck to paycheck and you do not have to live with financial stress during the course of your entire life. My main passion is to help, encourage, and inspire people in any way that I can. What’s your best advice for people who stutter just entering the workplace and for those in a career striving to achieve greater success? Never, ever, think you are inadequate in the workplace because you stutter. You are NOT unintelligent, and you are NOT sub-par. In fact, you are incredible, because in spite of your stutter, you are making the huge step to enter the workplace and try your best to be the best person in that company. The best advice I can give anyone is to never think less of yourself because it takes your longer to get your point across or finish what you are trying to say. You are knowledgeable in your area, so what you say matters and is worth waiting for!

- Navigating Insurance Coverage for Stuttering Treatment
Learn how to advocate for insurance coverage for stuttering therapy. Understand policy exclusions, how to appeal denials, and how to educate employers and insurance providers. Insurance Coverage for Stuttering Obtaining insurance coverage for stuttering treatment can be challenging for many families. Insurance reimbursement for speech and language services is often limited, and in some cases, these services are excluded entirely from benefits plans. Unfortunately, many policies include specific exclusions for stuttering due to outdated information or misunderstanding of the condition. As a result, people who stutter frequently experience claim denials or discover that stuttering treatment is not covered at all. The National Stuttering Association works to raise awareness about the importance of speech therapy coverage and encourages individuals, families, and professionals to advocate for equitable insurance benefits. How to Advocate for Coverage Advocating for appropriate insurance coverage for stuttering can take place on many levels. You can make a significant difference by taking the following steps. 1. Appeal Denied Claims If your claim for stuttering treatment is denied, appeal the decision . Most insurance companies have multiple levels of appeal. Provide documentation from your speech-language pathologist, including diagnosis codes and detailed therapy goals. Persistence can often lead to a favorable outcome. 2. Review and Discuss Your Plan Contact your employer or insurance provider to confirm whether speech therapy services are included in your coverage. If they are not, ask your employer to consider adding these benefits. Sharing educational resources about stuttering and its neurological basis can help correct misconceptions and demonstrate the need for inclusion. 3. Contact Your State Insurance Commission If your appeals are unsuccessful, reach out to your state insurance commission or local legislators. Explain why speech therapy for stuttering should be covered under general medical or communication disorder benefits. Your advocacy helps shape future policy decisions. 4. Promote Public Awareness Educating the public about stuttering helps eliminate stigma and supports long-term policy change. Share accurate information through community organizations, local media, or social platforms. Public understanding creates momentum for change in how insurance companies view stuttering treatment. Know Your Coverage Before Starting Therapy Insurance plans vary greatly in how much they cover for speech therapy services. Before beginning treatment, review your specific benefits carefully. Confirm the number of sessions covered, the need for prior authorization, and whether you are required to see an in-network provider. Understanding your policy helps prevent unexpected costs and allows you to plan effectively for therapy. If you are unsure about your benefits or need assistance, the National Stuttering Association can connect you with resources and advocacy tools to help you navigate the process. - Taylor Worsham | NSA
< Back Taylor Worsham – From Acceptance to Fierce Advocacy When Taylor Worsham found the NSA in 2023, she was looking for connection and community. What she found was so much more—an organization that welcomed and accepted her with open arms and encouraged her to use her voice. Today, Taylor is a part-time NSA team member, helping lead our copywriting and community engagement efforts. But before her role on staff, she began as a volunteer, quietly creating graphics and social content—amplifying the voices of others while learning to embrace her own. “I grew up thinking I was a victim of my stutter. However, accepting myself for who I am has helped me in every way imaginable. Don’t get me wrong; I still have days where I think, "Man, life would be so much easier if I were just fluent," but I realize that God made this way for a reason and I truly believe it makes me a better person. I can't imagine it NOT being a part of me.” Taylor shares that speech therapy, for her, always came with an expectation of fluency. No one ever asked what she wanted. It wasn’t until she found the NSA that she learned stuttering acceptance was even an option. “Before the NSA, I honestly had no idea that acceptance was even an option. As a child, I went to speech therapy for years and was taught that stuttering was bad. This community is so brave and so vulnerable. It’s inspiring. I no longer despise or wish to change this part of myself. It's just a different way of speaking.” One of Taylor’s proudest moments came on International Stuttering Awareness Day 2024, when she sent a heartfelt message to her entire company—disclosing her stutter, offering helpful tips, and pointing to resources for learning more. The response was full of encouragement and support. “It was a big moment for me. As someone who tried extremely hard their whole life to pretend that their stutter didn't exist, I'm proud of the leaps and bounds I have made on my stuttering journey this far.” Her message to new NSA members is full of warmth: ”This community is so welcoming and accepting. I know it can be daunting outside looking in, but there is something different for everyone. If you can't make it to an Annual Conference, join in on virtual events. There's an entire community here waiting to welcome you with open arms.” Get to know Taylor: Favorite ice cream: Vanilla Beach over mountains or desert Comfort rewatch: The Golden Girls Current jam: “Slow Burn” by Kacey Musgraves Pet: 1 cat Fun fact: Taylor’s favorite Bible verse is Jeremiah 29:11. Dream vacation: Italy to honor her Italian roots Taylor’s story is one of resilience, reflection, and rising into your voice. Thank you, Taylor, for your voice! Previous Next
